This past Saturday we completed our first volunteer work day at the Dog Park. This was the first phase of the Greenline Architecture Project. With donated materials from the County, a group of about 24 voluteers worked through the morning heat to address the water drainage issues in the park. We were able to expand the watering area, digging down to create a quasi-french drain. We also added sand to the dust bowl to cut down on mud and dust, added sand and gravel to then entrances, and mulched the plantings and edges.
The folks that showed up worked cheerfully and diligently to finish it all off in one morning. Thanks so much for all the hard work.
Here's some photos stolen from Bud Rosser's facebook page.
The Mother Matilda Beasley Park is located on East Broad Street in downtown Savannah. The dog park was created in Spring 2008 and is maintained by the Chatham County Commissioners.
This site is very unofficial and is for the benefit of dogs and dog owners who frequent the park or those that are interested in visiting. We have no authority over the park except for our mutual interest in keeping it a vital community space.

Volunteer Work Days - July 10 & 17
We're looking for able-bodied, fun-loving volunteers to come and help us with some park improvements on the mornings of July 10th & 17th from 7:30am until it gets too hot to keep working.
The County will be bringing by some sand and mulch to be spread over our dusty landscape. Hopefully it will help with the continued erosion and drainage issues we've been having and save the remaining plants and grass.
Please consider coming by for a bit to help us out. Rakes & shovels appreciated as otherwise we'll be stuck. And of course, snacks & water & dog treats are welcome!

Update on Greenline Architects & Park Improvements
I heard from Keith at Greenline Architects this morning regarding their pro-bono project to make some improvements to the park. He's been in touch with the County officials regarding the plans and received a verbal go ahead. They'd also like us to work with Park & Tree Commission regarding all the work so they are being brought into the mix.
Keith is going to spend the next few weeks itemizing the details re: construction and materials to submit for final approval from the County. Then we can meet to figure out how we'll manage soliciting for funds and donations.
The County is excited that Greenline and the dog park users are getting involved, especially with the other plans for Beasley Park going into effect in the next couple of years. Other plans for the space include moving the historic Matilda Beasley home to the site and adding permanent restrooms to the south end of the park.
Will keep you all posted with further updates!

I sent an email to Assistant County Manager Pat Monahan this morning, asking him to consider altering the watering schedule of the Dog Park. It can be seen on my FB page. I'll let you know the response.
