The Mother Matilda Beasley Park is located on East Broad Street in downtown Savannah. The dog park was created in Spring 2008 and is maintained by the Chatham County Commissioners.

This site is very unofficial and is for the benefit of dogs and dog owners who frequent the park or those that are interested in visiting. We have no authority over the park except for our mutual interest in keeping it a vital community space.

Park Maintenance Ideas

As some of you are aware already, a conversation seems to be coming to a head between the county commissioners and the Savannah Tree Foundations and dog park users about how best to maintain the park. In thinking about some of the possibilities, I found it useful to start investigating what other dog parks around the country are doing. Here are some links that I found interesting and food for thought.

Long Beach Recreation Dog Park
Ocean City NJ Dog Park
Best Friends Animal Society
Austin Off-leash Dog Park Committee Considerations
Culver City Dog Park
Dallas Deep Ellum Dog Park

It seems that every park has faced the dilemma of ground cover. One suggestion that repeatedly seems to be occurring is decomposed granite (thanks Tara for first mentioning it). Here's are some pro/cons for different types of ground cover:

Grass - most aesthetically pleasing, soft on padded feet, stays cool ; but obviously it requires a lot of maintenance to keep it from wearing away.
Wood Chips
Decomposed Granite

Thanks Kate,

I will email this and some of the other suggestions to Karen at the STF. There is also a meeting coming up with the neighborhood association. I will post it on the blog.
